Making Observations and Inferences in Science

Today, student practiced making observations and inferences.  Observations can be made through using your five senses.  Making an inference happens when you explain an idea based on what you observed.  Today, students went made observations about items in ten "mystery bags."  They recorded observations in their journal like hard, round, smells like fruit, etc. Based on their observations, they tried to infer what object was the in bag. Check out some pictures of today's lab:

Look at the rainbow below:

What observations can you make about this picture?

What's Happening in Math?

These anchor charts sum up what we have been learning in the past week in math.

DOSS Routine

Students will master the Social Studies standards for third grade through a routine that we call DOSS (Daily Oral Social Studies). Most weeks, students will get the blue DOSS sheet on Monday and there will be a quiz on Friday. (Please pay attention to the newsletter as some weeks may differ.)  Here's what you need to know about Social Studies for this year:
  • Social Studies is for a grade (A,B,C,D,F)
  • You can access the Social Studies text book through our blog (See link to the right)   Username: ssguest 3   Password: grade3 (This is also in the back of their planner.)
  • There will always be a section of the weekly newsletter informing you of the DOSS focus for each week (page number, topic and chapter)
  • Students keep their blue DOSS Sheet in the HW folder all week so they can study
  • If students study their DOSS Sheet and participate in class conversations, they will be successful on the weekly quizzes (we are not trying to trick them) :)

This is an example of the week DOSS Sheet.
Students use a textbook in class and can access it online. Link is to the right.

Store Time Fun!

On Friday, students participated in their first Store Time in the Russell/Moody homeroom.  Students earn money each day for coming to school and making good choices.  Students deposit their money each day and keep track of their account balance by recording in their Account Log Book.  On Fridays, students who have maintained a weekly behavior grade of A or B are invited to store. Students make tough economic choices of whether or save or spend.  Students can purchase items to keep or rent games to play with friends.

What is your favorite thing about our store time? Leave us a comment below!
